Holographic edible glitter doesn’t change the colour of a cocktail the way a syrup does: it reflects different shades depending on the angle, the light and the movement. To show off this effect, the glass needs to be able to turn and the light source must create several reflections.

“I travel the world to find effects that make a drink truly memorable. With glitter, the golden rule is also the simplest: use very little, maximise contrast and keep a steady hand.”

EDIBLE GLITTER & MIXOLOGY

The colour appears when the glass moves

The holographic effect depends less on quantity than on the angle between the light, the product and the viewer’s eye.

The base

A clear or contrasting drink that keeps the particles visible.

The movement

A gentle turn of the glass that reveals the different shades one after another.

Creating a real visual shift
  • Test at least two lighting angles instead of only looking at the glass head-on.
  • Choose a fairly clear base and keep the decoration minimal.
  • Present the cocktail in motion, then let the guest bring the effect back to life themselves.

Holographic doesn’t mean colouring

The term describes a shifting reflection: the same particle can look yellow, green, purple or blue depending on the angle. The liquid doesn’t necessarily change from one uniform colour to another. This distinction helps you present the product honestly and plan the right kind of video.

In diffused light and without movement, the effect can seem subtle. It becomes far more visible when the glass turns under a side light. So run your test in real service conditions, not just by looking into the open jar.

Intense yellow or intense purple

An intense yellow base works well with citrus, strained pineapple or a sunny palette. Intense purple pairs with dark berries, grape, lavender or a night-time theme. In both cases, the stated colour is only a starting point; the secondary reflections appear with movement.

In a drink of the same colour, the effect may lack contrast. In that case, use a lighter base, a clear ice cube or light from the opposite side. An iridescent rainbow version is a more neutral alternative for a varied range of recipes.

Filming and photographing the change

A still photo only captures a single moment. To reveal the holographic effect, opt for a short video in which the glass turns slowly. Place the light at roughly forty-five degrees, then adjust until you see the shades move.

Keep the background simple and avoid multicoloured lights, which make it impossible to pick out the product’s own reflection. The movement should be smooth; fast shaking turns the detail into a blur.

Building the effect into service

Present the cocktail in a well-lit area and show the guest how to turn the glass. This gesture brings the effect to life and creates a shareable moment. In a bar, standardise the position of the lamp and the glass’s route so that the experience doesn’t depend on one particular server.

Use a light dose and flavourless glitter when the recipe mustn’t change. Close the container between uses and keep a dedicated measure. The holographic effect comes from the light, not from piling on more product.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cocktail really change colour?

The effect comes mainly from the particles’ reflections, which change with the angle. The liquid itself doesn’t necessarily turn a different uniform colour.

Which light should you use?

A crisp side light usually lets you see the variations. Test several angles in the actual venue.

How do you show the effect on social media?

Film the glass turning slowly against a simple background rather than taking a still photo or shaking it quickly.
