Knowing how to use edible glitter in a drink takes method more than product. Choose a suitable edible product, add it very gradually, mix according to how fizzy the drink is, then present the glass under lighting that brings out the shimmer.

“I travel the world to find effects that make a drink truly memorable. With glitter, the golden rule is also the simplest: use very little, maximise contrast and keep a steady hand.”

EDIBLE GLITTER & MIXOLOGY

The method in five simple steps

Prepare, dose, mix, check and re-swirl: each step makes the result more consistent.

Before mixing

A dry container, a small measure and a cocktail whose colour you have already signed off.

When serving

A gentle stir to get the glitter moving again, then straight out to the guest.

How to use it
  • Prepare the drink completely before adding the glitter finish.
  • Start with a very small amount, then adjust once you have checked the result.
  • Adapt how you mix: a spoon for a still cocktail, a gentle swirl for a fizzy drink.

Step 1: choose a suitable product

Check that the packaging clearly states food use, and read the ingredients list, any allergens and the manufacturer’s instructions. To avoid changing the recipe, flavourless glitter is usually the simplest choice. A flavoured version, by contrast, has to be treated as an ingredient in its own right.

Then choose the colour with the cocktail in front of you. Rose gold stands out on clear and pink bases, blue in clear drinks, silver in cool palettes, and black or purple in high-contrast recipes. A real test beats a choice made from the packaging alone.

Step 2: dose without overdoing it

Use a small, clean and completely dry utensil. Add a pinch, stir, then hold the glass under your service lighting. If the shimmer is visible as it moves, the dose is enough. Adding more does not necessarily make the effect last longer; it may just form a denser deposit.

When the recipe is for a bar or an event, turn this test into a standard measure. Note the utensil, the fill level and when to add the glitter on the recipe spec sheet. The team can then reproduce the result without guesswork.

Step 3: mix according to the drink

For a still cocktail, stir gently with a spoon, or use a frother very briefly if the texture allows. For champagne, a soft drink or a Spritz, avoid any sudden movement: pour gradually and simply swirl the glass. The bubbles will already help the particles circulate.

A very thick or pulpy drink will give a different effect. The shimmer will be less visible in the centre and more visible near the sides of the glass. Do not automatically increase the dose; try a more contrasting shade or a surface finish instead.

Steps 4 and 5: check, then serve

Let the glass rest for a few seconds to see how quickly the glitter settles, then get it moving again just before serving. This pause helps you decide whether the recipe suits counter service, tray service or a photo shoot.

Wipe the glass, reseal the container straight away and show the guest how to gently swirl their drink if the effect slows down. The ritual becomes interactive and the glitter keeps its role: a controlled bit of theatre that leaves the balance of flavours untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Should you mix before or after adding ice?

Test both options depending on the glass. Generally, finishing the drink first, then adding the glitter and stirring lightly gives you better control over the final result.

How long does the swirl last?

It slows down naturally. How long it lasts depends on the texture and the movement; a gentle swirl gets it going again.

Can you prepare the glasses in advance?

It is best to add the glitter, or get it swirling again, close to serving time, especially if the presentation is key.
