An edible printer deposits edible ink onto the surface of a food or drink. It lets you add a logo, a name, a photo or a pattern without using pre-cut sugar sheets.

Edible Printer: How It Works, Printing Surfaces and Professional Uses
The surface
A stable, sufficiently dry surface, prepared at the right size to keep the design legible.
The file
A high-contrast design, correctly sized and approved before service begins.

How does edible printing work?
The design is sent from an app, then the print head sprays very fine droplets of ink. With a portable model, the user glides the device along a guide or directly over a fairly even surface. With a fixed machine, the item is placed under a motorised head.
- A dry, stable, low-fat surface.
- A constant distance between the head and the surface.
- A high-contrast design, prepared at the right size.
Which surfaces can you print on?
The PrintPen works on dense coffee or cocktail foam, sugarpaste, macarons, biscuits, bread, dry-rind cheese and many desserts. Texture matters more than shape: a porous or very wet surface absorbs the ink and reduces definition.
Portable or fixed?
| Criterion | Portable | Fixed |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | Excellent | Dedicated station |
| Formats | Various objects and surfaces | Defined printing area |
| Throughput | Flexible | More automated |
| Use | Bars, catering, patisserie | Hotels, events, regular volume |
Prepare a legible design
Remove details that are too fine, boost the contrast and test the design on a neutral surface. A simple logo a few centimetres wide stays more legible than a complex photograph on a small foam top.
Hygiene and maintenance
Only use compatible edible cartridges. Close them properly, clean the printing area according to the instructions and avoid any contact between the head and a wet preparation. A daily test helps prevent dried-out nozzles and incomplete prints.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ink change the taste?
The amount deposited is very small. On most surfaces, its impact on taste is negligible.
Do you need to be able to draw?
No. The image, text or logo is prepared in the app before printing.
