Pen ink and edible ink can both leave a coloured mark, but they are not made for the same purpose. Office ink is not a food ingredient and must never be poured into a cartridge meant for printing on a drink or a dessert.

Pen Ink vs Edible Ink: Why They Are Not Interchangeable
The set-up
A stable surface and a finishing station organised around the real flow of service.
The artwork and the technique
An approved design, a compatible cartridge and a quality-checked result.

- Use only a cartridge explicitly sold for food use.
- Check compatibility with your exact printer model.
- Keep the packaging, the product reference and the batch information.
Why are inks not interchangeable?
Edible ink uses ingredients and colourings intended for consumption under defined conditions. Pen ink or office printer ink may contain components that were never formulated or assessed to be applied to food.
A cartridge or colour that looks similar proves nothing. Viscosity, formulation, food-contact materials and compliance documents are all part of the system.
Checking an edible ink cartridge
- Manufacturer’s name and reference clearly legible.
- Clear statement of food use.
- Declared compatibility with the printer.
- Date, batch number and intact packaging.
- Storage conditions provided.
The PrintPen example
Evebot PB1 cartridges are designed for the PrintPen and the Evebot Smart. The manufacturer specifies a water-based formula with edible colourings, a volume of 20 ml and a shelf life of twelve months unopened, then six months after activation.
Use the colours and references specified by the manufacturer. A cartridge that fits mechanically but is not approved for food use must not be used.
If non-food ink is swallowed by accident
Do not give improvised advice. Keep the product, check its label and contact a poison control centre or a healthcare professional, depending on the situation. This article is not a substitute for a medical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can you refill a cartridge yourself?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly allows it with a compatible edible ink. Otherwise, use the original cartridge.
Is “water-based” ink always edible?
No. “Water-based” describes the base of the formula, not approval for food use.
